Buffer vs Hootsuite

Buffer bills per channel from $5 a month and keeps a free plan. Hootsuite bills per seat from $99 and dropped its free plan in 2023. For most small teams Buffer wins on cost and simplicity. Hootsuite wins when you need social listening, which Buffer does not offer at all.

01The difference

What is the main difference between Buffer and Hootsuite?

The pricing unit is the whole story. Buffer charges for each channel you connect, so a solo creator on three channels pays very little and an agency on forty pays a great deal. Hootsuite charges per user seat, so one person managing fifty accounts pays once, while a team of six pays six times regardless of account count.

Feature-wise Hootsuite is the broader product. Social listening, competitor benchmarking and mature approval chains are things Buffer simply does not have. Whether that breadth is worth roughly twenty times the entry price depends entirely on whether anyone on your team opens those tabs.

Buffer vs Hootsuite questions

Direct answers about how these two tools differ.

Is Buffer cheaper than Hootsuite?

For almost every small team, yes. Buffer Essentials is $5 per channel per month and Hootsuite Standard is $99 per user per month. The exception is one person managing a very large number of accounts, where a single Hootsuite seat can beat many Buffer channels.

Does Buffer have social listening?

No. Social listening and monitoring streams are Hootsuite strongest differentiator and Buffer offers nothing equivalent. If listening is why you are comparing these two, the comparison is already settled.

Which has a free plan?

Buffer. Its free plan covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each and does not expire. Hootsuite discontinued its free plan in 2023 and now offers only a 14-day trial.

Do both have a unified inbox?

Yes. Buffer has a community inbox and Hootsuite has a fuller one covering comments and messages across networks. Hootsuite inbox is the deeper of the two, particularly for teams assigning conversations.

Which is better for agencies?

Hootsuite, if the retainer includes listening or reporting. Buffer if the work is purely publishing, because per-channel pricing across many small clients still tends to land lower than several Hootsuite seats.

Can either tool make video?

No. Both schedule video you have produced elsewhere, and both have AI writing assistants for post text. Neither generates footage, presenters or voiceover.
